Creative Block is A Myth

I know, I know, it sounds crazy.

Let’s lead with this — there is nothing your mind can do to block your ideas. It seems mentally impossible for that to happen. I remember reading somewhere; to get past writer’s block you must keep writing, or creating, until you can formulate exactly what you mean or what you’re thinking. Technically, you already know what you want to say or what message you’re going for. To get past your creative block, the logical thing to do is to create. Keep going until your vision comes to fruition.

I’ve realized the main reason people suffer from a creative block is because there is a sense of fear. After noticing it was fear and doubt, I made an effort to push through and stop being so nervous in my art.

It’s all in your head~

Whenever I feel stuck in my craft, I coach myself to keep thinking freely even if it’s frustrating. I don’t force it though, if I feel that I am trying too hard then I will simply put it down and come back to it later. The trick is to train your brain to show up for work rather than waiting for inspiration to spike. I won’t force the ideas out of myself, but when I can, I work through it. The easiest way to grow in self; when you can recognize a place of discomfort and be able to move forward.

Ways to enhance your creative flow

Sometimes practicing other things can help you move past this feeling of not knowing where to go in your craft. For instance, you can try new hobbies or pick up ones you’ve been putting off; read a book, start a new sketch, journal about why you’re feeling like this even. All of these sound cliche as ever, but they are things that could contribute to your creative growth or process. A lot of people may not agree, but these are just apart of my study for those who struggle with writers/creative block.

  • Make a new playlist to vibe to while creating
  • Read a book
  • Start a new sketch before you get back to your art (whether you can draw or not)
  • Create somewhere else, change of scenery
  • Take a nature walk without technology
  • Stretch your body

These are some ideas that could help when you’re in a rut with your creativity. I understand that everyone has different solutions, but the point is to get your mind off of your work so the ideas can flow freely.

Treat It As A Job

Lastly, one thing that has helped is setting time aside to be creative. Treating your craft as a job helps with blocks because your mind is in the zone to work. It is easier to prepare your ideas for when it is time to sit down and let the creativity come naturally. Setting proper time slots helps with taking your art seriously, so this can be a huge contribution to personal growth.

My goal in this article is to help my audience understand that just because you can’t think of an idea right then and there, it does not equate to something blocking your creativity. Everything you are looking to innovate is already in your mind. Sometimes the execution process may take longer than your original desire and that’s okay too. Creative block is a myth, don’t let any theories stop you from your artistic desires.

Always,
