Is Content Creation the new 9–5?
The new American dream
Why does it seem like the only way to be financially free is to start creating content? The new generations are becoming more inspired to be influencers than to find a profession that requires more school.
The only way to exist freely in modern society is to have multiple income streams to survive.

The American Dream
The initial American dream was that a poor person could become wealthy and successful through hard work and determination. When people think of the American dream, they think about being married, owning a lovely house with a white picket fence, having two or more children, and retiring at 60. Nowadays, that version of the American dream seems so far-fetched because the economy has inflated by more than 20%.
Modern-Day Society: The Age of Information
As a Zillenial (born on 01/01/97), I can tell you that we were sold the idea that if we went to college, we could find a company to work for and retire with, but times have changed. Now, future generations won’t know if retirement is in the foreseeable future because companies don’t really offer retirement plans anymore; it’s a 401K, which is optional.
We are still determining how we will have the means to retire by 60 because of inflation. We’re almost all convinced that creating content is the only way to achieve financial freedom.
Is Content Creation the New 9–5?
Millennials and Generation Z are creating content online to make enough money to quit their day jobs and influence the masses on social media. It used to be odd to make money on the internet, and now it looks as though everyone and their mothers are making money online, be it YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or even Snapchat. The amount of money people make looks more promising than working for one company for several years just to retire with a humble three hundred thousand dollars. People working for themselves (content creation) make that amount in a couple of years and sometimes a year, depending on your stats.
Traditional Education
Getting a higher education will always be a flex in this era. Many people don’t finish for whatever reason, and that’s okay. Even if you graduate and don’t use your degree, you still have the education to keep you moving forward. I advocate for higher education (even though it’s expensive) because the experience, the knowledge, and the opportunities expand when you’re in that network.
Is Creating Content Worth it?
Growing an online platform can be highly beneficial because it has created a new lane of professions. Although you’re still working for a company, the alternatives are to start a business or even create an app that can help others create revenue (OfferUp, Fiverr). There are so many ways to make money online that the traditional route to professionalism is less common.
Should we have a backup plan?
Content creation should be used as another stream of income. At the same time, a backup plan is always good (getting a degree), but when it comes down to it — if you’re creating a sustainable income by posting online, then the only way you will need a plan is if you’re not good at managing your income. I also think having a backup plan is based on the person’s discretion. It would be nice to have something to fall back on, but these days, most people aren’t even using the degrees they went to school for, so you make the decision.
In Conclusion
To summarize the information above, creating content can be extremely beneficial if you know how to manage your time and money properly. It is cool to have the backup credential because you never know the kind of network you’ll have access to. Creating content is becoming the new 9–5 because people desire financial freedom and dual citizenship. Society is not convinced that working a traditional job will give us the opportunity.
Are you a content creator? What are your thoughts?
Until next time,
