It’s Okay to be Obsessed With Your Craft

Obsession may seem like a sinister thing in Hollywood movies, but it’s entrepreneurial fuel when it’s directed toward the right things. For instance; your craft, hobby, trade, or pursuit.

Craft is your technique; your brain’s neural connections, sculpted over hours of practice.

It is not egregious to be obsessed with something unless it is unhealthy for you. When you obsess over your goals and ambitions it’s not really obsession, it’s drive. Have you ever thought that when people are working to be successful, if they are driven enough it automatically becomes an obsession? Seems like that’s all they eat, sleep, and breathe. That’s what it takes to navigate your way to any goal. I feel like it comes down to how bad you want to meet your objective. Some people want it bad and others understand that slow and steady wins the race (sometimes). It’s all about about the hours in your day.

Think about it like this, only 3% of the world has a networth of one million dollars. Although everyone doesn’t have goals of being a millionaire, I’m sure a lot of entrepreneurs do.

As an entrepreneur, with time you begin to understand how important it is to constantly work on your craft. There is no break when you own a business or work for yourself. It is important to be obsessed with what you do. I love the saying “If you love what you do then you never work a day in your life” although I don’t know if I agree with it or disagree just yet. However, during the process of growing in your craft you fall in love with working. I say this because now that I own a business, I feel like I’m always working even though I am already obsessed with what I am doing.

In February of 2021, I launched my own business named Always Sunny. I went with that name because I wanted to emphasize self expression, holistic healing, and promote environmental sustainability. I make tote bags for the planet and wellness products for humans. Now that I’m 9 months in, I have quickly learned how cut throat business can be. I say this because no one else can keep your business running, only you.

I’m starting to finally see how I want my business to operate. I’ve experienced so many lessons in these short nine months. BUT, the beautiful thing about your business is — IT’S YOUR BUSINESS. You can structure it however you please. My favorite advice that I use is, your business must be a product/service that YOU would use.

In order to keep your business up and running you must keep working. This is why it’s extremely important that you are motivated by whatever you do.

The real truth is to be truly great at what you do creatively requires focus, determination, ambition and passion rather than just obsession, which is not quite the same thing.

Stay focused, keep an open mind, and don’t stop believing in yourself.

Always,

Sunny
