Sustainability is the study of natural resources that keeps an ecological balance in the world around us. With an unsustainable environment, it can put our health at risk for us and future generations. These days we are living in a distinctly modern, consumerist, and massive urban existence. People are stuck thinking the need for supplies and many more items are in high demand. On an estimate, we use about 40% more resources every year than we can put back in our environment and that needs to change. The idea is to focus on the things that could help make our communities more sustainable.

The factories that make plastic cause pollution while creating the product. Thatā€™s why big cities are normally covered in smog, because there are many manufacturers, so it weakens the air quality. Bad air quality can damage the respiratory system of humans. If you are exposed to pollution, it could potentially put you at risk for lung cancer, asthma, or even heart attacks.

3 Pillars of Sustainability

  • Environmental
  • Economical
  • Social

Sustainability is divided into three layers to help differentiate the many ways we could contribute to saving the planet. It is important to understand the different avenues of the ecosystem so we can figure out a disposition to create a better life for future generations.

Environmental

Environmental sustainability is about more than just recycling. It is important to think about the community around you. Ways to practice environmental sustainability include: unplugging your household appliances when they are not in use, eating food from local gardens, and planting seeds in the neighborhoods around you. I know at the surface it seems like an extra mile, but who wouldnā€™t want to go the extra mile to create a better world as we know it. This also means driving less, carpooling when accessible, and other ways that could lessen natural gasses.

Economical

Economic sustainability contains a city or country using its resources to maintain a healthy economy in their area. Whether it be the minimum wage, using less electricity to help with the cost of bills, and volunteering in local communities. By improving your workplace environment, you will minimize employee turnover, save more money, gain productivity, engagement, and innovation. A direct way to support sustainability for the economy is to buy from local brands and businesses that are smaller.

Social Sustainability

Keeping up with social sustainability means listening to the people. In a time where there are so many social injustices, there needs to be a change in the system and our practices. Social sustainability performance issues include human rights, fair labor practices, living conditions, health, safety, wellness, diversity, equity, work-life balance, empowerment, community engagement, and more. Building an environment that makes everyone more comfortable is considered sustainable.

The Road to Sustainability

Lately, learning about sustainability has influenced me to contribute to the culture of sustainable living. I think it is important for humans to be aware of the places around us and help make the earth a better place to live for generations to come. Creating an eco-friendly environment is not a choice, but a necessity. It is more logical to create a life of quality and make clear decisions all while saving money and helping the planet stay green. I hope this article inspired you to be intentional in the way you live.

Always,

Sunny J.
